Personal

What I like to do when I am not teaching or working on scholarly projects.

Bonsai styling. My wife calls our back yard “the agricultural research station.” I enjoy starting trees from seed I have collected, and admit to being a notorious seed thief. Several specimens in my collection are trees that I grew from seed. I have a special fondness for Japanese maples.

Gardening. I enjoy growing a variety of plant, not just trees. For several years my wife and I maintained the Medicinal Garden at Historic Bethabara Park.

Hiking. Most of our vacations we go somewhere different to hike, usually in the mountains.

Fly Fishing. I’m a middling fly caster, but that’s okay. My grandfather was famous for casting a line in his farm pond without actually baiting the hook. He enjoyed being out and watching the natural world go by, and did not want to stop to release the fish. I inherited his attitude, though occasionally I do hook something.
