I am a Teaching Professor and
Core Curriculum Coordinator of Biology
Officially, I oversee the Introductory Biology laboratory program for both majors and non-majors. I supervise graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) who lead individual lab course sections. I also develop, write, and evaluate the inquiry-based labs that make up our program.
Unofficially, I am the “cat-herder-and-problem-solver-in-chief” for our introductory biology lab program. That’s why I love what I do! Every day is different, and I get to spend each one figuring out how to solve problems that stand in the way of student learning.
Besides managing the lab program, I teach several lecture courses. Look under Teaching to find out more.
I have worked on a variety of projects in the past, and often start new ones. Sub-pages under Research and Scholarship outline current and past work. Generally my research and scholarly work centers on:
- Turning learning theories and research of others into practical methods for helping more undergraduates learn biology successfully;
- Using information technologies and data science to support and improve teaching;
- Promoting authentic assessment of teaching and learning; and
- Disseminating best practices by training current and future college teachers.
Nine research-backed philosophical principles guide both my teaching and scholarly work; they are briefly described HERE.
Finally, I am actively involved in professional service within and beyond the WFU community. Go to Service to learn more.
Check my Personal page to see what I’m usually up to when I’m not here!
